Vimeo for iPad

Great, finally a Vimeo app for iPad. No more of those annoying flash plugin errors in iPad Safari. A really great interface too.

trax

I’ve been waiting all summer to try this out. Ski Tracks app for iPhone. I tried it out and it gives some pretty interesting stats and maps to look at from your day on the mountain.

It offers time lapse replay from your runs, speed/altitude plots and automatically recognises runs vs lifts. It also allows you to access your ipod so as not to interrupt your music. You can export the maps as a .kmz file to google maps. It doesn’t drain the battery as much as I thought. Pretty cool! Now to try and beat 30mph.

Inception dreams

This is a mind blowingly good app that I downloaded for recently. It’s free and avaliable as usual from your app store. The app basically provides a looping soundscape based on your activity and mood, put together from a variety of stuff from the OST and augments this with sounds and noises from the world around you. It’s pretty cool and essentially provides your own Brian Eno-esque compilation. It hasn’t induced any dreams for me yet though.

This is a great new photo app for the iphone. And the best thing is its completely free! The filters are pretty good and cover good ground across the ‘lomo spectrum’. Its no substitute for the real film, but its a good substitute. Check it out

Wavetracks GPS

Well well, I never thought I’d never see something like this. The first GPS surf tracker app for the iphone, Wavetracks GPS. Seems like a pretty cool app at first glance.

The app, using the iphone’s GPS and accelerometer features allows you to track, wave distance, position, duration and your max/average speed for individual waves and your entire session. This can then also be transposed onto a vector aerial map by the looks of it. This will probably prove fun at first and is a definite novelty, but to be critical I wonder how useful this will actually prove, particularly to experiecned surfers who go by pure instinct and experience! My experience of waves in the UK, leaves me feeling that the inconsistency of many of the breaks will mean that my track map will look like a horses arse at the end of the day and this would offer little than a pretty picture. The raw data such as speed etc will be more interesting.

Another criticism to level against this comes from remembering what friends have said over the years about DIY water housings, and the thought of putting my iphone into a aquapack sends shivers down my spine! I’ve heard of horror stories about apple refusing to repair insured iphones, due to the litmus paper on the base of the phone turning colour after being exposed to the tiniest amount of moisture (moisture damage not covered by apple).

Taking nothing away from the guys that developed it, a well designed app and congrats to the developers, it looks fantastic too. A great effort and I would definitely give it a go if I still lived near the sea. Buy it here

|| Hipstamatic 160 ||

Following my recent review of Hipstamatic 155, the new version, 160, is here. Most importantly the fix to the Blackeys Supergrain film problem. The new features include, image stacks to organize prints, batch upload to social media sites, and a real plus, faster startup and lens/film mode flipping. Also taking advantage of the improved iOS4 and new iPhone 4 camera. Still no new hipstapaks tough.

Dammit

As a result of my new found enthusiasm and eagerness to find a suitable replacement hobby for surfing since moving to CO, Ive decided to take up golf. I now have a nice set of clubs a ‘michael jackson glove” and plenty of balls. My swing probably needs loads of work and Im saying dammit allot. My dress code is not really orthodox but I figure its the golfing not the fashion that counts. This is also another opportunity to download a golfing app for my iphone. Le Boogie goes tech

This is just too good not to blog about. Le Boogie Bodyboarding Magazine is quite hard and expensive to get in Europe, the first issue I had to get my sister to buy it in WA and send it to me with a total cost of something nearing the £30 mark. I was super chuffed to see today that there is now an app to download and view the issues at £1.79, heaven. Amping viewing pleasure wherever I am. No doubt there will be many happy boogiers with iphones. The iphone’s touch interface is made for this type of thing. Why haven’t more magazines cottoned onto this? Nice one Le boogie.
